Start with the customer’s description
The process begins with how the vehicle behaves: cold starting, smoke, oil use, warning lights, boost delivery, misfires, transmission behaviour and recent repairs. Intermittent symptoms can be as important as stored faults.
Scan all relevant control modules
A full scan can reveal engine, gearbox, emissions, voltage and communication faults that a dashboard light does not explain. Fault status and freeze-frame context matter. Old or sporadic codes may still justify investigation before tuning.
Review live data in context
Useful channels vary by platform. Requested versus actual boost, air mass, rail pressure, ignition correction, lambda, exhaust temperature, DPF pressure or soot estimates and gearbox data may all be relevant. A value is only useful when the test conditions and expected behaviour are understood.
Inspect the hardware
Split intake hoses, boost leaks, tired spark plugs, weak coils, contaminated sensors, restricted filters, fuel-delivery problems and worn transmission components cannot be calibrated away. Physical testing may include smoke or pressure tests and inspection of service items.
Make a tune-or-repair decision
The correct outcome is sometimes to postpone tuning. Repairing the fault first protects the vehicle and gives the calibrator clean data to work from. Once suitable, the original file should be retained and post-calibration behaviour checked for the application.

Will a diagnostic scan find every mechanical problem?
No. A scan reports what control modules can detect. Mechanical inspection, pressure testing, smoke testing or further measurement may still be required.
Can a high-mileage vehicle be remapped?
Potentially. Mileage is only one factor. Current mechanical condition, maintenance, data and intended use are more informative than the odometer alone.
